The conference celebrating the ifk’s 30th anniversary surveys the history and state-of the-art of paradigms of Kulturwissenschaften/cultural studies and probes modes of the study of culture/s within and beyond the university.

When the ifk opened doors in 1993, Kulturwissenschaft and cultural studies materialized in German-speaking countries as renewal programs for the humanities. Interdisciplinarity and dedication to socio-political questions – such as memory culture, the public sphere’s medialized character, gender and race – made approaches of Kulturwissenschaft and cultural studies highly appealing. Reflection on culture and a decidedly epistemological method enabled the opening and revision of self-definitions of disciplines. It also attracted students and researchers who were interested in the critical potential of research. Since then, the adjective »kulturwissenschaftlich« has established itself both as a name for university faculties and as a qualifying designation for studies and professorships. There are journals and academic societies dedicated to the study of culture/s, but only few institutes and degree programs carry the name »Kulturwissenschaft« as a term in singular.

The conference marking the ifk’s 30th anniversary wants to take stock of the past and think about the future of the study of culture/s. Which political, economic, and societal conjunctures, to speak with Stuart Hall, present themselves in the overarching core topics of the last years and the present? For example, within the research on memory culture and politics, in the shift from gender, ethnicity, and class as cultural constructs to identity politics; in the move away from the triad of technology-media-bodies towards questions of ecologies-infrastructures-affects? Which role did and do economic theories play in these turns? In what manner have coloniality and planetary interconnectedness been negotiated, and continue to do so, also in dealing with non-human lifeworlds?

In addition to the re-evaluation of paradigms and guiding concepts, one focus of the conference will be the very modes of the study of culture/s. Work pertaining to cultural studies does not only take place at universities, but extends to, for example, editorial offices, theatres, museums, and film. We are particularly interested in various forms of literature that not only addresses topics of of the field, but also provides methodical impulses, for example by performing polyphony in texts. The topic of the entanglement of individual life and societal forces, which has been the focus of theoretical reasoning many times, has found a literary home in autoethnography; conversely, speculative approaches were imported into the study of culture/s from science fiction.

We cannot know what our study of culture/s will look like in detail in the year 2043, since the most important stimuli always come from the off. For example, who could have foreseen the disruptive power of digitalization, in both a positive and negative sense, in 1993? A science that understands itself as a diagonal or lateral one with regard to socio-political constellations cannot know which challenges await it. But an honest retrospective and a polyphonic diagnosis of the present can only strengthen its hospitality for the future.
