Ernst van Alphen: Redirecting the Archive. Transgressive Archival Practices



aka/ifk Lecture – Since the 1960s archival principles have increasingly been used by visual artists to structure their works. Their aesthetic practices consist of archival inquiry or construction, and the works are built out of archival materials. This use of the archive for artworks does not, however, imply an unreflected instrumentalization of the archive as artistic medium.

Songs about outlaws have been sung since Antiquity; the cult of the brigand seems to be a quirky feature of the human psyche. Without attempting explanations for the phenomenon, the talk will focus on a selection of such ballads, with the intent of highlighting the very different approaches from which they are built.

Umgebungsaufnahmen. Zur Epistemologie, Technik und Ästhetik akustischer Ökologien

Die Offenheit akustischer Aufzeichnungen für Nebengeräusche wird seit den späten 1960er-Jahren nicht nur als Problem, sondern auch als Chance begriffen. Im Kontext von Field Recordings gewinnen Störungen und Hintergrundrauschen Bedeutung. Anhand historischer Umgebungsaufnahmen verfolgt dieser Essay die Epistemologie akustischer Ökologie-­Konzepte in den 1970er-Jahren. Er ist eine Einladung zum Zuhören: Vögel und Straßenszenen, Buckelwale, Brandungsrauschen und der Sound von politischem Protest.
