Darko Leitner-Stojanov: Yugoslav Labor Migrants in Austria and their Private Photographs (1970s–1980s). Creating a Sense of Self and Locality
How are experiences of migration articulated in the medium of photography? How do individuals envision their sense of Self, their subjectivity, and their social status in the new surroundings? How has photography been used (and continues to be used) to not only maintain transnational ties but also to build or depict community and identity across geographical locations?

Alexander McCargar: Shaping the Perception of Otherness. Performing the Ottoman in Vienna before 1800
Representations of the Ottoman occur frequently throughout European visual culture during the early modern period. Stereotypes, repeated motifs and battle scenes abound across painting, sculpture and the decorative arts. Harder to decipher, however, is how portrayals of Ottomans were propagated within structures of performance culture.

Michal Kopeček: Political Languages of Human Rights
Human rights as the political Grundbegriff of today's world are open to all possible political interpretations. The peaceful revolutions of 1989 in Central and Eastern Europe have been perceived, for good reason, as revolutions of human rights, which strengthened the legitimacy of Western-type liberal democracy and global neoliberal capitalism.

Brooke Penaloza-Patzak: The World as We Know It. Sclater’s Six-Region Model and the Life Sciences, 1858 to Today
Most research in biogeography today is based on a 146-year-old model that divides the world into six regions. These so-called Sclaterian regions were originally proposed by lawyer and zoologist Philip Lutley Sclater on the basis of the global distribution of birds, and subsequently adopted by researchers across the life sciences.

Laura Gianvittorio-Ungar: Hellenizing Dance. Greek Theater and Ausdruckstanz in Fascist Italy
The lecture enquires into the dynamics through which, in 1930s Sicily, an ancient Greek theater came to catalyze fairly mismatched dance cultures into a productive exchange. The INDA-Istituto Nazionale Dramma Antico had been restaging Greek tragedies for years when the fascist regime came to interfere with their artistic agenda.

Olga Schubert: No goals! No results! Counter-Publics and Opacity in Self-Organized Anti-Academies in the Arts
The past thirty years have witnessed an immense increase in self-organized academy programs and schools in the arts. Artistic practice is now often labelled »knowledge production« and exhibitions no longer show art objects, but instead enable processes of gathering and learning. In order to escape the subsequent commodification of knowledge in the art market, the artistic academies claim to create counter-publics or spaces of opacity.

Matthew Berg: Denunciation in Service of Democratization? The SPÖ’s »Referat zur Liquidierung des Nazismus« at the Birth of the Second Republic
Is there a fundamental difference between denunciation—with its malicious and spiteful connotations and association with authoritarian regimes—and informing authorities of scofflaws associated with those very violent and antidemocratic regimes once such systems have been toppled?

Heinz Bude: Zeitgenossenschaft.
