Sie sind sehr viele, sie sind überall, sie haben unterschiedliche Gestalten und Funktionen, ihre Auftritte finden unter verschiedenen Vorzeichen statt, und ihre Verweildauer kann kurz oder erstaunlich lang sein. Was die Nebenfiguren bei aller Verschiedenheit indes gemeinsam haben, ist ihr paradoxaler Status im Feld der Wahrnehmung: bei voller Sichtbarkeit weitgehend unbeachtet zu bleiben. Was eine Beachtung der Nebenfigur bedeuten könnte, wie sie sich bislang gestaltet hat, und von welchen Prämissen und Aporien die Versuche gekennzeichnet sind, ihre Bedeutung zu würdigen, ist die zentrale Frage dieses Essays, der entsprechende Auftritte im Spekturm von Film, Tanz, Theater, Serie und Bildender Kunst untersucht.
