In Orson Welles‘ Verfilmung des „Process“ trifft K. in seinem Großraumbüro unversehens auf einen Computer. Einer von vielen Einfällen des größten Theatralikers des Kinos, die zeigen, was Kafka erzählt: Romanmenschen durchlaufen bei ihm nicht mehr Stationen ihrer Bildung; Geschichten sind aus Institutionen gemacht, die das Leben formatieren.
1516 erschien, ein Jahr vor Luthers Thesenanschlag, mit Unterstützung des Humanisten Erasmus von Rotterdam, die „Utopia“ des englischen Staatsmanns Thomas Morus, der am 6. Juli 1535 – wegen der Verweigerung des Eids auf Heinrich VIII. – vor dem Londoner Tower enthauptet wurde. Die fiktive Beschreibung einer idealen Gesellschaft auf der Insel Utopia ist nach wie vor verblüffend aktuell, mit Bemerkungen zur Ökonomie, zur Abschaffung des Privateigentums und des Geldes, mit einer Kritik der Todesstrafe und des Krieges oder mit Kommentaren zu Religion und Sterbehilfe. Is history-making only the domain of human beings? For the American cultural anthropologist Anna L. Tsing, plants, fungi, and bacteria are also agents of historical change. Proceeding from the economics of colonial plantations and in light of the consequences of contemporary capitalism for the environment, Tsing argues in her Eric Wolf Lecture that we must foreground pests and pathogens, e.g., in our consideration of how history is made.
When the Red Army and Allied forces entered Berlin in 1945, the war had destroyed the city’s infrastructure, disrupting all “familiar points of reference—of community, of social and cultural network” for Germans caught in the transition.(1) Rebecca Rovit examines the effects of war and military occupation on an emergent theatre repertoire.

The lecture will elaborate Rudolf Pöch’s photographic practices applied during his anthropological in Austrian and German prisoner of war camps during the First World War. He and his assistant Josef Weninger not only systematically took pictures of the prisoners they measured – among them colonial soldiers from the “Half Moon Camp” near Berlin. They modified and optimized their photographic system in terms of techniques and procedures introducing a standardized system and a third obligatory photograph – which was stilled used in World War II and the post-War era.

Die symbolische Bedeutung des Bildersturms in aktuellen Konflikten ist bisher kaum Thema sozial- oder kulturwissenschaftlicher Analysen: Die TeilnehmerInnen des Workshops versuchen deshalb, anhand von drei Beiträgen zu zentralen Ereignissen und Akteuren Anstöße zu einer Diskussion dieser aktuellen Form der Visualisierung von politisch-religiösen Konflikten zu geben.
