This lecture explores Hungarian women’s digital grassroots activism that emerged in the early 2010s alongside the rapid global spread of social media, coinciding with the rise of an illiberal regime following the FIDESZ party’s two-thirds victory in the 2010 parliamentary election.

Die schwebenden und nicht selten erstaunlich erotischen Stoffe der Kreuzigungsdarstellungen von Mittelalter bis Barock erscheinen als flirrende Medienoberflächen voller Ambivalenz, Sinnlichkeit und Bewegung.

This talk revisits transformative concepts of the sixties regarding new media, urban renewal, psychedelic art, and cybernetics from the vantage point of postcolonial critique. It situates this constellation in the writings of South African artist Selby Mvusi, specifically in papers he worked on for an international design congress in Vienna 1965 and FESMAN in Dakar 1966.

Brazil and Latin America are cultural contexts marked by coloniality, state violence, structural racism, extractivism and multiple forms of popular resistance. Benjamin’s theories allow us to construct critical readings capable of recovering subaltern historical experiences made invisible by official narratives of progress.
No human society can exist without symbolic and practical forms of everyday maintenance. It becomes alarming, though, whenever radical demands for purity take over, when announcements of a »grand purge« for the sake of pureness gain political traction, or exterminatory practices take hold to affirm and implement such purity politics.

The global rise of the radical right is one of the defining political developments of the twenty-first century. Existing explanations have rightly emphasised political-economic transformations such as deindustrialisation, precarity and downward social mobility. Drawing on more than twenty-five years of ethnographic engagement in eastern India, this lecture argues that these explanations capture only part of the story.

The Palestinian citizens of Israel have always lived between a rock and a hard place, watching as their country goes to war against their nation. A lacuna in research on this group continues to this day—a group sometimes perceived by the Arab world at large as turncoats, sometimes recognized as the core of Palestinian steadfastness, but consistently overlooked for their active influence from within the Israeli parliamentary system.
