California’s culture and lifestyle are often thought to epitomize beauty, optimism, technological innovation, and future potentiality. In this conference, we will explore the cultural history of California, particularly its Viennese influences, through the example of the émigré architect Richard Neutra (1892–1970), who was crucial in the development of ‘Californian Modernity.’

In 1994, the Yiddish writer Chava Rosenfarb argued that Paul Celan “sought to distance the German language from the language of his murderers […], as if he had wanted to transform German into Yiddish.” In his talk, Matthew Johnson analyzes this striking claim within the larger history of Celan’s Yiddish reception from 1965 to 2002.

Translation into Persian has played a crucial role in modern Iranian history—not only transforming the Persian language but also effecting cultural, social, and political change. At the same time, it has been increasingly viewed as problematic. This talk introduces the role and the problem of translation in contemporary Iran.
