This lecture seeks to reconstruct Adorno’s understanding of the relationship between art and aesthetic experience on the one hand, and forms of cognitive judgment on the other.

Combining archival data from the 1950s–1960s with contemporary ethnographic fieldwork, the lecture explores what happens when heritage matters involve making a decision about which environmental assemblages should be passed down, and which ones should be left ›in the past‹.

Human rights as the political Grundbegriff of today’s world are open to all possible political interpretations. The peaceful revolutions of 1989 in Central and Eastern Europe have been perceived, for good reason, as revolutions of human rights, which strengthened the legitimacy of Western-type liberal democracy and global neoliberal capitalism. The lecture challenges these assumptions.
Kriege, Flucht, Pandemien, Klimaerwärmung, Nazis in den Parlamenten und wachsende LGBTQIA*-Feindlichkeit – manche Menschen kämpfen um ihr Überleben. Aber auch von nicht akut bedrohten Gruppen wird zunehmend ein unablässiges Gefühl von Gefahr wahrgenommen.

Representations of the Ottoman occur frequently throughout European visual culture during the early modern period. Stereotypes, repeated motifs and battle scenes abound across painting, sculpture and the decorative arts. Harder to decipher, however, is how portrayals of Ottomans were propagated within structures of performance culture.
